Film Noir Shoot At Sugarmill Night Club

Attended a group shoot with Hull photographers and models Facebook group.  We took over Sugarmill night club for the afternoon. All models and photographers shoot for free. An entrance was charged and the money was given to cancer research. £131.80 in total was raised.

Before the shoot I had discussed with Shaz (the model below) shooting a film noir set. She was very enthusiastic and keen to offer suggestions for the shoot.

I had read on the Strobist Blogspot on using hard light for a Film Noir Effect.

A single 430exII was used. I used a cable to trigger the flash, i used this because there was other photographers working around me using similar triggers. Cable is old school but it works.

I used a Rouge flash bender as a snoot. The a reflective umbrella partially opened to give a more concentrated directional light.

Thanks to Lou Watson and Abbie Towse for organising the shoot, Sugarmill for the venue and all the models, makeup artists and fellow photographers for their help and support of a worth while charity.

Day 7/30 a song that reminds you of a certain event…

The Paddingtons: Shame about Elle.

Smile for the nice man,

smile for the camera,

smile for the nice man,

wont you do it again

Day 97/365 Day 7/30 a song that reminds you of a certain event

Taken at Hull Freedom concert 2009. The Paddingtons performing to a crowd of 20,000 local fans.

The song reminds me of the very 1st open air concert that I ever photographed. It was also the 1st time I had heard the Paddingtons perform live. They did a fantastic set, which ended in a mic stand thrown in my direction and the guitarist been dragged off stage by other band members

Radio announcer (spoken) Warning!

Today's forecast calls for blue skies.

Sun is shinin' in the sky, There ain't a cloud in sight

It's stopped rainin' Everybody's in a play And don't you know,

It's a beautiful new day.

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why,

You had to hide away For so long (so long)

where did we go wrong.

Tripod Chasing

I have been following a fellow photographers blog for some time now. Neil Holmes is a local free lance photographer, who has been cataloguing and photographing Hull and the local area for the past 30 years. I meet Neil via twitter and have followed him and his blog since then.

Recently he posted some shoots of a green door on a derelict building, the building looked familiar so I asked where the photos where taken. Neil had taken the shoots around Princess Quay in an area ear marked for development.

I told Neil I would be tripod chasing him, the act of following another photographer to copy their work. Hopefully I have given my on touch to the photos.

They are all shot on a Canon 5d mark2 with a 24-70mm-L lens. Post process is with Lightroom and Photomatix 3.

Withernsea Pier Towers

Had a little time to kill in Withernsea so had a trip out with my camera. So got some shots of the pier towers. The pier towers where built 1875 and had to be later demolished after a coal barge collided with it. The towers are the only part that survives. There is also a memorial  bench built by Russ Coleman.

The images where edited in Lightroom and Photomatix, they where shot with 3 exposures with a stop +/- on each one.

Keyingham a village under snow.

My car has been stuck on the drive the last couple of days due to the snow. Luckily it was on the drive and not under the car port. This is now in pieces on my drive. I think the the foot of snow that fell overnight had not helped. Every one of the steel beams had bent under the weight. As it fell it has pulled off several pieces of guttering, this has lead to the formation of large icicles over our front door.
So I decided to have a wander around my village of Keyingham to see how the snow had changed things. It was nice to see people pulling as a community and clearing snow from each others drives and paths.
